Vision
Our vision is to improve the health and quality of life for as many young Guatemalan children and women as possible. As additional funds become available, we will reach out to more villages and help alleviate the chronic malnutrition while teaching them to become self-sufficient.

Program
To implement our program we:

  • Provide a daily balanced meal to children under 5 years of age and to women of reproductive age

  • Supply daily vitamins, children’s and prenatals with crucial folic acid

  • Educate women on the importance of nutrition and hygiene

  • Where applicable, set up and oversee a child-feeding center and community garden with training to stimulate cultivation of diversified crops and to use food locally available to improve their diet

Meet the Founder, Sandy Haggart

After growing up in La Jolla, Ca., I received my B.A. and M.A. from Northwestern University. My husband Gil and I live in Glenview, Il., having raised our family there.

My passion for Guatemala began 10 years ago on a medical mission trip, as a non-medical volunteer, fluent in Spanish. I was swept away by the country and its incredible people. In spite of their astonishing poverty, they remain hopeful, happy, and appreciative. I have returned every year with the highpoint being the adoption of our Guatemalan granddaughter. In this poorest of Central American countries, 98% of the water is non-potable, and malnourishment is epidemic. Birth defects and numerous health concerns are the results. Feed the Dream is the program I created to "give back" to a country that has given so much to us. Feed the Dream became a 501(c)(3) in November, 2004, and began its "seed money" campaign immediately. Shortly thereafter, our project began in its first location—Santa Cruz La Laguna on the shores of Lake Atitlan. As of May, 2007, we have added hamlets for a total of 12, reaching out to 900 daily. All of our locations are in the Guatemalan Highlands.

Site 1: Santa Cruz

The delightful village of Santa Cruz La Laguna is located in the Guatemalan Highlands on the shore of Lake Atitlan. This isolated mountain village is accessible only by boat or foot. The municipality of Santa Cruz (pop. 5,000) is one of the most underdeveloped in Guatemala. Theirs is a constant struggle against poverty, disease, and malnutrition. They have overwhelming needs with almost no access to resources. In January 2008, 3 more villages in this area have been added.

Site 2: Outside of San Martin Jilotepeque

In February 2006, we added a cluster of 3 remote mountain hamlets to our program. They are Cambolcol (pop. 188), San Antonio Choatalum (pop. 338) and Cruz Nueva (pop. 906). In each we have:

  • Set up a child-feeding center
  • Created a community garden with training to stimulate cultivation of amaranth, diversify crops, and use food locally available to improve their diet.
  • Provided nutritional education and hygiene with children's vitamins and prenatals with the crucial folic acid for all.

Through expansion of mountain hamlets in Jan. 2008, we now total 11 villages!

  • 3rd Annual Women's Golf Outing (2007)
  • Concert Fundraiser (2007)
  • 2nd Annual Women's Golf Outing (2006)
  • 1st Annual Women's Golf Outing (2005)
Our 3rd Annual Ladies Golf Outing was another sell-out! We were graced with good weather on Monday. Aug 6th-Sunday and Tuesday all area courses were closed due to heavy rains. We had 175 ladies enjoying golf and lunch with raffles and silent auction prizes. We even had an adorable puppy to help us net $48,000. a 50% increase! And each participant went home with fresh Guatemalan coffee beans due to the generosity of Susie and Dan Ephraim.
¡Delicioso y rico!

We actually had 2 fundraisers this year! On May 23 Wendy Ferguson and Suzanne Bolling of Wilmette hosted a Ladies’ Night Out with wine, cheese, and classical music donated by The Lincoln Trio. The purpose of the evening, other than having a good time, was to introduce young women (in their 30’s!) to Feed the Dream. And they did come! 230 young ladies enjoyed the evening which was graciously and anonymously sponsored at Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield! concert image
Feed the Dream held its 2nd Annual Women's Golf Outing at Highland Park Country Club on August 7, 2006. It was a great success - doubling in size from the previous year to 140 women and more than doubling the net profit to $32,000! The event included 9 holes of golf, lunch, program, raffle and silent auction prizes. It was really a fun and worthwhile day.
The 1st Annual Women's Golf Outing was an early sell out! In August, 85 ladies enjoyed golf and lunch on a perfect summer day at Willow Hill Golf Club in Northbrook. Sandi Thompson was a winner with the lowest score! Raffles and silent auction items contributed to our $14,000 success for Feed the Dream. One of the best aspects was the overwhelming enthusiasm and friendliness of all the attendees.
